Bhilwara (Rajasthan): Congress leader Sachin Pilot on Tuesday visited Rajasthan's Bhilwara and said the cruelty with the minor girl who was raped and killed cannot be accepted in any civilised society.
The incident pertains to the alleged gang rape and murder of a minor girl whose body parts were found in a coal furnace in Bhilwara. "The incident that was carried out and the brutality with which a minor girl was raped and murdered, cannot be accepted in any civilised society. The people who carried out this incident have crossed the limits of humanity. Those who had committed this heinous crime have crossed the limits of humanity," Mr Pilot told reporters. The Congress leader also met the relatives of the victim and spoke to the Bhilwara Police to seek an update on the investigation in the matter. "I've met the relatives of the victim and got to know that all the accused have been arrested and the police are also going to detain the two minors...The administration has informed me that the court will conduct hearings daily and charge POCSO case and take strict actions against them, " he added. Earlier, on August 6, a four-member committee of BJP women MPs met the family of the victim. The minor was allegedly gang-raped and burnt to death, the police have said, adding that her remains were found inside a coal furnace. Police said some local residents found the charred remains of the girl and her bangles inside the furnace. The police have arrested seven accused in connection with the alleged gangrape and murder case, Chief CUSAT has emerged as the only one from south India to secure a spot in the European Rover Challenge. KOCHI: In a remarkable achievement, a team from Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat) has emerged as the only one from south India to secure a spot in the European Rover Challenge, a coveted annual event that gathers the brightest minds in robotics and engineering from across the globe.
Among the three contenders from the country, Cusat’s Team Horizon will create and develop a Mars rover, a cutting-edge creation designed by the team’s engineers and researchers. “Each member brings a unique blend of talent and expertise to the table, covering a diverse range of engineering disciplines, including mechanical, electrical, computer science, and more,” explains Team Horizon leader Muhammed Siyad P, who hails from Malappuram. Having participated in the rover challenge since its 2019 edition, this will be Team Horizon’s second appearance in the global finals. Ten representatives from the team – which has about 25 members – are set to travel to Poland in September for the finals. A 75kg rover that is nearing completion will also board the flight with them. “The primary objective of the rover is to navigate the challenging Martian landscape, conduct experiments, gather vital data, and demonstrate the potential for human settlement on the red planet,” gushes Horizon’s mech wing member Ashique Ajay M, who hails from Thiruvananthapuram. Palakkad native Malavika S, who handles the team’s marketing, chips in that the selection for the finals was based on a comprehensive rover proposal showcasing its capabilities, along with a design report. “The estimated project cost is about `15 lakh. We received some funding assistance from Cusat, and are utilsing the Kerala Startup Mission labs for the project. We, however, are looking for more support. Our team is determined to make India proud on the global stage,” she adds. Horizon’s media head Jishnu M M, of Kochi, says the primary objective of the team, which was conceived in 2016, is spreading knowledge and skills. “We have already conducted some industry-level skill workshops with 150 students from 15 campuses across India,” he highlights. “Every year, as members pass out, fresh talent from the Cusat campus is inducted through rounds of interview and skill tests. We make them capable for the upcoming competitions and upholding Team Horizon’s legacy.” The students, showing the welts on their hands and backs, said that the teacher also abused them using filthy language. KARIMNAGAR: A biology teacher at the Kharkanagadda Government High School, Tumula Thirupathi, brutally beat about 25 students of class VIII, including girls on Tuesday. One of the students came out, called his parents on the phone and complained about the incident. Soon, more people gathered outside the school. Father of one of the students, Ullam Srinivas, lodged a complaint with the III Town police.
His daughter told him that Thirupathi entered the classroom, bolted the door and caned the students indiscriminately. The stick broke into two pieces as the teacher used it on the students, said 13-year-old Pujitha. The students, showing the welts on their hands and backs, said that Thirupathi also abused them using filthy language. Enraged by the incident, the parents requested authorities to take stringent action against the teacher. Based on the complaint, the police booked cases against the teacher under Sections 342, 324, 290 and 506 of Indian Penal Code (IPC). Taking a serious view of the incident, the education department ordered a departmental inquiry. Jayashree Perumal will become the first graduate in her family once she completes the course. CHENNAI: In a first, two government students from Tamil Nadu, one of them is a daughter of daily-wage labourers, have been selected to pursue undergraduate degrees in Taiwan with full scholarship offered by the East Asian country. While Jayashree Perumal of Pannandur village in Krishnagiri will study mechanical engineering, Avalsindu G Jeyalakshmi of Chennai plans to pursue a course in international business.
Jayashree Perumal will become the first graduate in her family once she completes the course. Her parents work as casual labourers in Pannandur village and she completed her Class 10 at the local government high school. “After completing Class 10, I moved to a government higher secondary school in Krishnagiri four to five km away. I scored 576 out of 600 in Class 12 in March 2022. Since I wanted to clear Joint Entrance Examination (JEE), I convinced my parents that I would take a break to prepare for JEE. I received coaching at the Centre for Excellence in Saidapet and I got a seat at NIT-Nagpur,” Jayashree said. ‘Free tuition, monthly allowance for expenses’ I learned about scholarships being offered by various countries through the Nan Mudhalvan Scheme and applied for them. “We were also trained to go through the interview process and write a statement of purpose to get the scholarship while we were at the Centre of Excellence,” she said. Jayashree said she would want to contribute to improving agricultural technology after completing her course. “Even though our family doesn’t have farmland, I grew up surrounded by them. I aim to contribute to the advancement of agricultural technology after I graduate,” she said. Sources said, around 20 students from government schools across the state applied for the scholarship. “We are planning to raise awareness about scholarships offered by various countries. We have already encouraged students to apply to countries including Hungary, Japan, Canada, and South Korea this year. More students will apply for these scholarships from next year,” said a trainer who assisted with the process. Apart from evaluating the academic performance of students, Taiwan officials, through an interview process, also assessed the ability of students to integrate culturally since they are moving to another country at a young age. “Of the 120 students who have been awarded scholarships to pursue UG, PG, PhD and other programmes, only three are UG students. The officials also test students’ knowledge about the country and the course they are pursuing. Many countries offer such scholarships so that their firms in India could employ people who are familiar with both countries. While the tuition fee is free, students will also get a monthly allowance to cover their other expenses,” he said. A Valsindu G Jeyalakshmi, who studied Class 12 at the Centre of Excellence in Saidapet, said. “I scored 524 marks out of 600 in commerce group. I am excited to pursue a degree abroad and looking forward to it.” The Lok Sabha House Committee re-allotted the 12, Tughlaq Lane Bungalow to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday, a day after he was reinstated as Lok Sabha MP. NEW DELHI: The Lok Sabha House Committee re-allotted the 12, Tughlaq Lane Bungalow to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday, a day after he was reinstated as Lok Sabha MP. “The whole country is my home,” Gandhi quipped when asked about his reaction to being re-allotted the bungalow, which has been his home for nearly two decades.
Gandhi vacated the official residence on April 22 after the LS housing committee, which deals with matters related to the housing of members of the Lower House, served a notice asking him to vacate. Ever since, he has been staying with his mother Sonia Gandhi at her 10, Janpath residence. “I am ready to pay any price for speaking the truth,” he had said after vacating the house. On Monday, the Lok Sabha secretariat restored Gandhi’s status as an MP, days after the Supreme Court stayed his conviction in a defamation case. He was disqualified as a member of Parliament on March 23 after a Gujarat Court sentenced him to two years. Meanwhile, AICC general secretary K C Venugopal said on Tuesday that Gandhi will visit his constituency Wayanad in Kerala on August 12-13. The court said a Special Investigation Team (SIT) will be formed if the state government fails to complete the probe by the deadline. NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Tuesday gave Tamil Nadu time till September 30, 2023, to complete the investigation in the alleged cash-for-jobs scam case filed against minister V Senthil Balaji. The court said a Special Investigation Team (SIT) will be formed if the state government fails to complete the probe by the deadline.
Calling the state’s request for six months time to complete the probe as “unreasonable”, a bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Ahsanuddin Amanullah said it would not entertain any application regarding an extension of time. The case pertains to illegalities in the appointment of employees in state transport corporations during Senthil Balaji’s tenure as transport minister under the AIADMK government between 2011 and 2015. On May 16, the top court, while paving the way for the crime branch to continue its investigation and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to commence a money laundering probe in the case, directed the Investigating Officer to include offences under the Prevention of Corruption Act. “We had expressed our displeasure to Mr Gupta (the state’s counsel) that asking for six months time was totally unreasonable. In the original order itself, only two months' time had been granted. Considering the facts and circumstances of the case and the submissions made, we extend the time granted by this court by judgment dated May 16, 2023, till September 30, 2023. No further application for extension of time will be entertained and if it is brought to this court that the directions have not been complied with, the SIT would be constituted,” the bench said in its order. ED continues questioning Senthil Balaji for second day The allegations pertain to five categories of posts --- junior engineer/assistant engineer/junior tradesman/ driver and conductor. Senior advocate Jaideep Gupta in a brief hearing before the bench on Tuesday said the final report was filed in respect of junior engineer posts before the competent trial court. Investigation is also complete in respect of assistant engineers and appropriate authorities have been approached for grant of sanction for prosecution. The final report will be filed before the court pursuant to the receipt of sanction for prosecution from competent authorities. Gupta said, “The recruitment involves five categories of posts. One category is complete. In the second one, it is ready and sanction is awaited. The minister is in jail and it’s not as if he is roaming free. With respect to the other three, there is voluminous material and we have prepared a chart also,” Gupta said. Expressing difficulties being faced by the IO in examining the witnesses regarding the investigation for the three posts, Gupta said, “A total of 37 lists containing the names of 2,794 persons were taken into account by the Metropolitan Transport Corporation, Chennai, and appointment orders were issued to them for the posts of junior tradesmen, drivers and conductors. These figures have to be verified by conducting an investigation, which is a time-consuming process.” Pointing out the tardy and lethargic investigation being carried out by the state, senior advocate Gopal Sankaranarayanan and advocate Prashant Bhushan said six months of time was excessive. It was also stated that the police are scrutinising the documents extracted by the forensic sciences department from hard disks and pen drives seized from the minister and his associates’ houses. Meanwhile, the ED continued questioning the minister in Chennai for the second day on Tuesday. The agency took him under its custody on Monday evening after the SC allowed his questioning till August 12. Official sources were tight-lipped about whether the minister will be flown to New Delhi for further interrogation or if the ED would seek an extension of his custody.
